As fall decor slowly creeps into our home, I’ve been thinking a lot about our porch. And more specifically, how I want to decorate our front door.

Even though it’s tiny, our porch is one of my favorite things to style each season. Especially for the cool, crisp autumn months! And adding a little something to our front door is always on the top of my decorating to-do list.

Last year I made a beautiful DIY corn husk wreath. I love how it turned out, but it took me an entire afternoon to get it all done. This year, with work, school, the girls’ activities, and the blog, our schedules feel busier than ever. (I’m sure many of you can relate to the crazy!)

When it comes to DIY projects right now, I need simple. This door basket with fall foliage checks all of the boxes. Quick. Easy. Pretty. And a super simple solution to your door decor dilemma.

Here’s a quick list of what you need to make a DIY door basket with fall foliage.

How To Make A Fall Door Basket

1. Pick Your Basket and Fall Foliage

I loved the basket that I used for my DIY spring door basket so much that I decided to use the same one to create this version for the fall.

I like the round shape of it, and it is has held up surprisingly well despite being exposed to our harsh Midwest weather for the last two seasons.

You can also shop your home and use a basket you already have, or pick up a cheap basket at a garage sale or a thrift store.

As for the foliage, use whatever you feel most drawn to! This year I am decorating for fall using earth tones. To bring those same colors outdoors, I picked up a few different stems in warm hues of deep rust and brown. I also found some pretty purple berries to add a little more texture and contrast.

2. Add Floral Foam

Use a utility knife to trim some floral foam to size and place it in the bottom of your basket.

The foam block will help fill the space in the bottom and to anchor your foliage.

3. Cut And Arrange Your Foliage

Next, use a wire cutter to trim your stems and fall foliage to the right length. I like to use the scientific “eyeball method” to decide how much length to cut off.

Once I have the length where I like it, I use the first stem as a template to cut the rest of them to match.

Then begin to add your foliage. There’s no right or wrong way to do this step. Just use your creativity. I like to tuck in a few pieces, fluff them, and then take a step back so I can see the whole basket.

This helps me to spot bare areas that I need to fill in and to decide if I want to make any changes to the arrangement before adding more stems.

4. Top With Spanish Moss

Once you have the stems how you like them top your basket with a bit of Spanish moss.

Then step back and admire your beautiful new fall DIY.

I love how it turned out, don’t you?

This is such an easy project and a quick way to add some pretty autumn foliage to your front door or wherever you decide to hang your basket.

And would you believe that it only took me 15 minutes from start to finish? Now that is my kind of DIY project. Quick. Simple. And beautiful.

The basket adds such a pretty pop of color to our front door, and it’s the perfect way to welcome fall to our home.

Now to get the rest of the porch decorated! The temps here feel like summer again, so I plan to wait a bit until I know my mums won’t get fried by the scorching hot sun. Hopefully, I will be able to share our porch fully decorated for fall in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

      Hi Marie,

They are wall planters. I use some siding clips to attach to our house. Here is a link to the planters: https://rstyle.me/+2Iid2_VKsSUu0BCpa4WmGg

I love how this turned out! I’m always so lazy when it comes to clipping the wiry stems from the branches so I give up and mine always look like poop. Now I’m buying some good wire cutters. I may or may not have ruined a couple of pairs of scissors. :/ Thanks for sharing this! pinned

Yes! A good pair of wire cutters make all the difference. Scissors just won’t cut it…okay bad pun, but I couldn’t help myself.🤣 I hope you get a chance to try making your own. Can’t wait to see it.

Your door arrangement is beautiful. Where do you get your fall colored foliage. I have a basket but would need to order on line. Your advice would be great

Thank you, Claudia. I found my stems at a few different places. I always have good luck at Joanne’s and Hobby Lobby or sometimes Michaels.
