How to Decorate a Cozy Bedroom with Rustic Fall Decor
In my opinion, cozy and fall naturally go together. Over the years, I’ve found a few simple tricks for adding warmth and charm to our bedroom without spending a lot.
Here are three of my favorite ways to bring in subtle touches of rustic fall decor that make the space feel extra inviting.
1. Update Your Bedding with Cozy Fabrics
One of the easiest ways to make your bedroom feel cozy for fall is to refresh your bedding with seasonal throw blankets and decorative pillows.

Nothing says autumn like plaids, and I fell in love with this blue and white checkered blanket the moment I saw it.

The plaid pattern adds a layer of coziness to our bedding, yet still coordinates perfectly with our everyday blue pillow shams for a fast and affordable update. Casually draping the throw blanket on the end of our bed adds warmth and instantly updates the look of our room.

You can also swap out your lightweight summer bedding for something cozier. Look for fabric with texture such as fleece or cable knit.
On top of our white duvet, I’ll often layer a light waffle weave blanket or a heavier Sherpa blanket for those extra chilly nights.

Decorative pillows are one of my favorite ways to transition between the seasons. Look for coordinating patterns like plaids, stripes, or fall florals. And, whenever possible, opt for buying pillow covers instead of the whole pillow to save money and storage space!
2. Embrace the Season with Some Fall Foliage
Using a mix of seasonal foliage is another easy and budget-friendly way to bring the outdoors into your bedroom for fall.

Fill a vintage jug with fall stems and place it on your nightstand. These golden yellow leaves add a subtle pop of color and perfectly complement our blue and white bedding.

Don’t be afraid to use more than one type of rustic-looking fall floral when decorating your bedroom. Mixing and matching fall foliage is a great way to create a more realistic and interesting arrangement, as I did here in the black metal wall pockets above our bed.
Decorating Tip: Add some pinecones, twigs, or other natural elements to your arrangement. This will help to ground your fall foliage and make it look more natural
3. Hang a Fall Wreath
Hanging a fall wreath above your bed is a great way to add a touch of seasonal charm to your bedroom…or, in my case, two fall wreaths!

Most years, I like to center one wreath over the tin ceiling tile that hangs above our headboard. This fall, I used blue velvet ribbon to hang matching magnolia and pinecone wreaths from the thrifted shutters that flank our bed.

When choosing a wreath, be sure to pick one that is the right size for your space. The wreath should be large enough to make a statement, but not so large that it overwhelms your bed.
Hang the wreath at a comfortable height, and make sure it is hung securely to prevent it from falling.

Rustic Fall Decor Ideas for a Cozy Living Room
Our living room is where we spend most of our time together as a family, so I always like to make it feel extra cozy once the weather starts to cool down. A few simple and affordable updates can go a long way in creating a warm and welcoming space for fall.
Here are some of my favorite rustic fall decor ideas to add charm and comfort to your living room this season.
1. Incorporate Natural Elements
Bring the outdoors inside by incorporating natural elements. Place a vase with dried wheat stalks, branches, or fall leaves on a side table.

Gourds, acorns, apples, and pears also make good (and cheap!) fall decor.

Or fill an old soup tureen or vase with dried pinecones as I did here.
2. Create a Fall Centerpiece
The next way to add rustic seasonal touches to your living room is to create a fall-themed centerpiece or vignette for your coffee table.

There are a few rules of thumb I like to keep in mind when creating a vignette, but the biggest takeaway is don’t be afraid to experiment. Sometimes it takes a little moving, swapping, and restyling before everything clicks.

If you’re feeling stuck, Pinterest, magazines, and blogs are all great places to look for ideas and inspiration. And remember, it’s okay if your vignette doesn’t look or feel right on the first try.

Save money by shopping your home and using items you already have on hand. This woven basket makes the perfect base for my fall centerpiece, created with my favorite glass cloche, some vintage books, and a few faux pumpkins.
A vintage tray, or even a dough bowl, also makes the perfect base for a seasonal display.
One DIY arrangement I’ve put together is a magnolia and artichoke centerpiece in a dough bowl. It’s full of texture and color and feels so cozy for fall. I’ve also made a pumpkin centerpiece filled with fresh flowers, which is another easy way to bring a bit of the season indoors.
Little touches like these rustic fall centerpieces, whether with pumpkins, greenery, or even a few candles, can make your living room feel extra warm and inviting.
3. Decorate the Mantel
If you have a fireplace, the mantel is an ideal spot to add a few seasonal touches for fall.

To add some rustic fall charm to our living room, I used autumn foliage on our mantel paired with some small branches to give the garland a more realistic look.

Then I layered in some chunky wood candle holders, stacks of vintage books, and a seasonal sign to complete the look.

And if you’d like a more neutral option, one of my favorite rustic fall decor ideas is to make your own DIY book page garland. It’s a simple project that adds texture and charm without a lot of color.

Thank you, Tammy! Happy fall, friend!
I like your living room. It feels warm and inviting. Decorating is a hungry beast if we try to keep up with the latest trend. The most attractive homes are the ones that feel timeless and reflect the person that lives there.
Thank you so much, Cathy. Your comment really means a lot. The room itself is long and narrow which makes it a bit challenging to style (and photograph!) but I try to make it as cozy and functional for our family as possible. And you are so right…it can be exhuasting, and expensive to keep up with the trends. Its something I try to remind myself of often. Especially this year as I’ve put more focus on being mindful of our expenses and creating a home filled with unique pieces that are are meaningful to our family.
Jen I love how you paired soft shades of blue with cozy fall neutrals in your bedroom. Pinned and promoting on IG today. So happy to be on tour with you!
Thank you so much, Laura. I have a lot of blue in my decor year-round, so I love that I’m able to work in into our home for the fall to keep my decorating easy and affordable.
Your bedroom looks so cozy and inviting and I agree. That blue check throw is perfect, such a great accent for your bed. Your living room looks like the perfect place to snuggle up and enjoy a great movie or just read your favorite book. I love your cloche vinette. Cloches are one of my favorite accessories. Thanks so much for joining the tour this season, your home is filled with tons of inspiration.
Thank you so much Marty for hosting. It wa a fun week with a lot of beautiful inspiration for the season. Thank you for including me. Happy fall!
