Choosing the Right Theme and Colors for Your Chinese Dinner Party

When it comes to styling the table for your Chinese dinner party, it starts with choosing the perfect colors.

To make my table setting feel as authentic as possible, I drew inspiration from Asian-inspired decor paired with traditional Chinese colors like red and gold.

I learned that the rich red and gold hues aren’t just beautiful, but they’re also deeply symbolic in Chinese culture, representing luck, prosperity, and success.

While looking for red and gold decor to style my Chinese dinner party tablescape, I stumbled on these red fringed napkins in my linen collection.

I honestly forgot about them and was thrilled when I found them in the bottom drawer of my antique dresser.

The dresser is where I keep most of my napkins, tablecloths, and chargers for special parties like this, and it is always the first place I look before purchasing anything new.

Affordable Chinese Dinner Party Decor Ideas

When I think about Asian-inspired decor, bamboo, and lanterns are the first things that come to mind.

I found some bamboo leaf fans from a Hawaiian luau party I hosted a few summers ago and these beautiful woven lanterns that were from a summer garden party tablescape.

They turned out to be the perfect touches for my table setting.

Party Planning Pro Tip: Save some money on decor by shopping your home first! Look around for items you already have on hand that can be re-purposed or double as decorations for your Chinese dinner party

Tips for Styling a Beautiful Asian-Inspired Dinner Table

When setting the table for your Chinese dinner party, consider creating layers at each place setting to enhance visual interest by blending various colors, patterns, textures, and materials.

To style my tablescape, I began by draping a crisp white tablecloth over our dining room table.

Next, I placed round woven chargers at each place setting, followed by these white dishes with beautiful beaded rim detail.

For a pop of color, I layered red fringed napkins between the dinner and salad plates and topped each place setting with bamboo hand fans.

Additionally, I found this gorgeous coral fabric with red accents, which I made into DIY napkins, placing one on top of each bamboo fan to tie everything together.

Of course, you can’t host a Chinese dinner party without some chopsticks!

I fell in love with these pretty gold chopsticks that perfectly match my favorite gold silverware.

Finally, to finish my tablescape, I opted for simple cocktail glasses along with these pretty pink ribbed tumblers.

Together, they brought a touch of sophistication and charm to the final look of the table

Designing a Gorgeous Floral Centerpiece for Your Chinese Dinner Party

In China, meals are usually served family-style, with a variety of dishes placed in the center for everyone to share.

So, with that in mind, it’s best to create a centerpiece you can quickly remove from the table when it’s time to eat!

Enter my favorite way to create a showstopping centerpiece—fresh flowers!

With so many colors and varieties, flowers are the perfect option for styling a centerpiece that looks expensive but isn’t.

I grabbed a bouquet of fresh flowers from the grocery store to create a DIY floral arrangement for my Chinese table setting.

(Pro tip—grocery store flowers are the best and often very affordable!)

I opted for blooms in bright shades of pink, yellow, red, and coral to complement the color scheme of my party.

Then, I arranged my flowers in a small vase of water and placed the arrangement in the center of a larger cylinder vase.

In Chinese culture, oranges symbolize good fortune and abundance, so I added sliced oranges around the inside of the larger vase for an extra pop of color.

I think it turned out beautifully, don’t you?

Party Planning Pro Tip: Want to know a secret for helping your flowers look fresher for longer? Use clippers or sharp scissors to cut your stems at a 45-degree angle under running water. The angled cut lets your flowers soak up more water, ensuring they stay vibrant and beautiful.

Adding Special Details to Your Party Decor

To add an extra special touch to the table, I included a few final details.

small gold dragon on Chinese tablescape for the Chinese New Year or Chinese Dinner Party

Since it is the Year of the Dragon, I incorporated a touch of whimsy by placing a small dragon figurine at each place setting.

To coordinate with the tablescape’s theme, I used a bit of leftover gold spray paint to give the dragons an elegant makeover.

I also included more faux oranges to complement the floral centerpiece and the overall theme of my Chinese dinner party.

And let’s not forget those stunning woven bamboo lanterns – aren’t they just gorgeous?

To add to the vibrancy of the party, I hung some pink and red paper fans from my vintage leaded window above our buffet.

You could even add battery-operated tea light candles inside the lanterns for some extra ambiance.
