How To Decorate A Small Front Porch For Fall
If you’ve visited our home before then it’s no secret that we have a tiny front porch. If you can even call it a porch. It’s really more of a glorified cement stoop. But the word porch sounds so much fancier, doesn’t it?
So, porch it is.
And though it may be itty bitty, I still love to dress it up each season to make our home feel welcoming and inviting.
If you have a small front porch too don’t be discouraged. This post is for you! I’ll show you how to make the most of your space and decorate your front porch for fall with six simple tips.
Start With A Color Scheme
The first thing I do before I start any decorating is to choose a color scheme. Not only does it help keep me focused, but it makes it easier to ensure that the final look is cohesive.
This year, I kept things a bit more neutral to coordinate with the inside of our home which I decorated using shades of tan, cream, and navy blue. (You can see more of our fall home tour HERE.)
When it comes to choosing a color palette for your fall front porch, think about what hues you are most drawn to. Do you love the warm and deep traditional autumn colors like the ones I shared in this fall inspiration post? Or maybe you prefer cool colors or brilliant copper and gold tones.
Here are some photos of our front porch from the past few seasons. You can see more of our warm and cozy fall porch with mums and pumpkins HERE and our dark and moody fall porch at dusk HERE.
And, if you need help deciding, Pinterest is a great place to start! You can search “fall color schemes” or visit my Pinterest page and see the pinned images on my porches board for more inspiration.
Embrace Symmetry
And symmetry to your fall front porch with DIY pumpkin topiaries or planters filled with fall florals.
Not only does symmetry create a sense of calm, but it’s proven that our brains are more drawn to design that has balance.
Refresh Your Planters
Speaking of planters, give your old summer flower pots a quick refresh with different colors of mums and plants.
Some fall hardy options are ornamental cabbage, sweet potato vine, trailing sedum, or fountain grass.
If you’re not sure where to start, you can follow the thriller, spiller, and filler planting method I shared in this post to create stunning container gardens just like the pros!
Dress Up Your Door
One of the quickest and easiest ways to add a touch of fall to any small front porch is to dress up your door.
This year I opted for this pretty wreath with white oak leaves from Home Goods. It really pops off the dark charcoal paint color, don’t you think?
Several months ago, I gave our front porch a mini refresh, and I’ve been in love with our “new to us” door ever since.
If you’re feeling crafty you can also make your own door decor like this corn husk wreath I made a few years ago, or a simple fall door basket like the one shown above.
Maximize Your Space
Maximize your small front porch space by getting creative with how you decorate.
Go vertical by hanging wall planters on the side of your porch. Or expand beyond your front porch to make the space look larger by adding additional planters or outdoor decor.
A bundle of cornstalks is also a budget-friendly fall decor option that takes up minimal space and draws your eye up, which gives your front porch the appearance of being bigger.
Add Outdoor Accessories
Finish styling your small front porch for fall with a few outdoor accessories.
Adding a doormat or a pair of layered rugs is the perfect way to add some cozy autumn touches.
And versatile pieces like lanterns or DIY pumpkin luminaries add charm and character.
And no fall porch would be complete without pumpkins! Stack pumpkins on your front steps, or you can add them to a vintage wood crate or basket.
