Friendsgiving Talbescape Blog Hop

Thanksgiving is my hubby’s favorite holiday, so when my friend Aliya from Open Doors Open Hearts asked me to join her and a group of other blogging friends for a Friendsgiving Tablescape and Centerpiece Blog Hop, of course, I said yes.

If you are visiting from Stacy at Bricks ‘n Blooms, thanks so much for stopping by! I’m glad you’re here and look forward to sharing my simple Thanksgiving centerpiece idea with you.

For those who are new here at MWLS, welcome! My name is Jen. I’m a wife, momma of two sweet girls, and a lifelong Nebraskan. I love to share about our life here in the Midwest and all the things that make a house a home.

You can read more about me here, and I’d love to learn more about you too! Be sure to say “hi” in the comments below and tell me where you’re visiting from.

Simple And Beautiful DIY Artichoke And Magnolia Centerpiece

If you know me, then you know one of the things I love the most is to create beautiful seasonal tablescapes. Since it has become a tradition to host Thanksgiving at our house, this was the perfect opportunity to create something special and unique for our table this year.

Simple And Beautiful DIY Artichoke And Magnolia Centerpiece - Midwest Life and Style Blog

As simple as it is beautiful, this DIY artichoke and magnolia centerpiece is such an easy fall craft. And, with only three steps, it can be made in less than 20 minutes.

Supplies

  • Dough Bowl
  • Faux Artichokes
  • Magnolia Leaf Stems

Tools

  • Wire cutter

How To Make A DIY Artichoke and Magnolia Centerpiece

1 . Fill The Bottom of The Dough Bowl

This first tip to make your centerpiece is a super simple hack that I use for almost all of my centerpiece DIYs. Use plastic bags! We try to recycle them as often as we can, but since they always seem to be in abundance at our house, this is a great way to use them.

Building the Base of the Centerpiece using Plastic Bags to Fill the Dough Bowl - Midwest Life and Style Blog

To start, crumple up some plastic bags and place them at the bottom of your dough bowl. The bags help to fill up any extra dead space and will give the completed centerpiece more height (aka…it will help to make your bowl look more full).

The more bags you add the fewer artichokes and stems you’ll need to use later, which will help save you money on supplies.

And who doesn’t love that?

2 . Add The Artichokes

Next, it’s time to add the artichokes. Add them one at a time and place them evenly throughout the dough bowl.

Simple And Beautiful DIY Artichoke And Magnolia Centerpiece

Every few minutes I stepped back to make sure the centerpiece looked balanced and that there were no bare spots.

Then, if something didn’t look right it was easy to make a change before I added more artichokes to the bowl.

Simple And Beautiful DIY Artichoke And Magnolia Centerpiece

Besides the fact that it is super easy-peasy, the best part about this DIY artichoke and magnolia centerpiece is that you can make it your own. There’s really no right or wrong way to create the arrangement. Just do whatever looks best to you!

You can even add in other fall elements like pinecones, acorns, or other fall foliage.

3 . Cut And Place The Manolia Stems

The last step is to add magnolia stems. Use wire cutters as needed to trim the stems or cut individual leaves and gradually place them throughout your dough bowl, tucking them between the artichokes.

Some leaves I placed with the brown side facing out to help add a bit of dimension and fall color to the centerpiece.

Work your way from one end of the bowl to the other. Stop and step back as needed to check for bare spots.

Continue to add leaves until your dough bowl is full. Again, there’s no right or wrong way. You can add as many or as few leaves as you like. Just make sure you don’t see any white through the greenery. You don’t want any of the plastic bags to show through!

Hi there! The one I have I purchased from Hobby Lobby a few years back. I can’t find the exact one online anymore, but here is a link to a similar one from HL: https://www.hobbylobby.com/Fall-Thanksgiving/Decorations/Containers-Storage/Wood-Dough-Bowl—Small/p/80883872 and one from Wayfair that has good reviews that is about the same size: https://rstyle.me/+vx10QhO6oD2sLNjfTxK49w. I hope that helps!

I really like the centerpiece with Magnolia and Artichokes. I have several faux Artichokes but will have to buy a few more and I am going to take apart a Magnolia wreath I have and for filler use pinecone. May add a few sprays of wheat for a real harvest theme. Can’t wait to give it a try for my November table. Thankyou and Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you, Anne! I love how the centerpiece came together and I loved the design on the pretty teacups and saucers. I thought the color and the cute quails were perfect for fall. I found out that the design is somewhat rare (read expensive!!!) and collectible. I need to keep hunting around thrift stores now so I can find more pieces to add to the collection.
