How To Decorate A Flocked Christmas Tree
It’s no secret that Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. So you probably won’t be surprised to learn that we have more than one Christmas tree in our home.
In fact, we have three!
How did we become a multi-tree family you ask? It started when we moved to our current home several years ago. For years before the move, I wanted to put up a tree in our bedroom, but we didn’t have the space…until now!
And so, after some begging, my husband, who more often than not goes along with my crazy ideas, caved to my pleas. And a brand new flocked tree joined our little Christmas tree family.
We had never owned a flocked Christmas tree before and learning how to decorate it took some patience mixed in with a lot of trial and error. But, now that I’ve got it down to a science, I’m going to share my tips with you.
Styling your tree might seem daunting at first, but it doesn’t have to be hard! Here are the five easy steps I use to decorate a flocked tree for Christmas.
1. Choose A Theme
The first thing I do each year before I start to decorate my flocked tree (or any tree for that matter) is to choose my theme for Christmas.
As someone who loves to be creative, I like to change up my decor a bit from year to year. But, I’m going to follow that statement up with this. Do not feel like you need to do something new every year, too.
I’m a big believer in doing what YOU love. And if what you love is using the same colors and decor each year, then I say decorate away to your heart’s content.
Recently, I shared a sneak peek at my Christmas plans. This year it includes a classic red and white color scheme with some gingerbread accents to add a bit of nostalgia and charm.
You can see how I started to bring that theme to life with my DIY snow globe centerpiece and a gingerbread Christmas tablescape.
Last year I decorated our holiday home in hues of blues and greens with tartan plaid. The year before, I decked the halls with traditional red and hints of gold. I love to get creative and keep things fresh.
So, what’s the biggest takeaway when choosing a theme to decorate your flocked Christmas tree? Decorate it in whatever way makes you happy!
There are no rules at Christmastime. Just enjoy, have fun, and start with a plan in mind.
2. Arrange Your Ornaments
Once you’ve decided on your theme, lay out all of your ornaments and group together the like colors and styles.
Start at the top of your tree with the largest ornaments and work your way toward the bottom using a zig-zag pattern.
You can see I started with some large wood snowflakes. Then I tucked in a few small cream-colored Christmas stockings to give the tree a cozy feel.
After the large ornaments have been added, fill in the empty spaces on your tree with different colors and sizes of balls or other baubles that fit your theme.
I wanted to choose bold-colored ornaments that would stand out against the flocked branches, so I used a mix of red and gold balls I found in my Christmas decor stash to decorate my tree.
Then I added a few new red and white ticking stripe balls in two different sizes.
Tip: To make sure your tree is balanced, pause every so often and step back to see the full view. This will help you notice any bare spots on your tree or places where the ornaments feel a bit too heavy.
To finish, I tucked a Santa into each one of the stockings. I love the vintage look of these ornaments, and since they fit my red and white theme, I couldn’t resist adding a few to my tree.
Tip: Don’t forget to hang some of your favorite ornaments or meaningful family heirlooms on your tree to make it feel extra special.
3. Add Some Ribbon
After you’ve added all your ornaments, it’s time to add some ribbon.
You can use one style of ribbon, as I did, or pair ribbons of different patterns and widths to create more impact.
To make large loops like these, I used wired ribbon and cut small strips from each roll to make it easier to shape.
Then I started from the top of the tree and created a waterfall pattern, twisting and tucking the top and bottom of each piece of ribbon into the tree as I worked my way down.
In total, I used about 8-yards of ribbon to decorate my flocked Christmas tree. I left the back bare since it faces the wall, but you can add more or less ribbon as you like.
4. Use Floral Picks
Floral picks make the perfect accent to complement the overall look and feel of your tree. Seasonal florals, frosted branches, berries, and pine cones are all good options.
These frosted red berry picks are one of my favorite ways to accent a flocked Christmas tree. Would you guess that these “picks” were actually part of a larger bush?
By buying one large stem of berries I was able to make a lot of picks, for less money. And, not only do I use them to decorate my flocked Christmas tree, but I use them in my garlands and in my pots on my holiday front porch.
Tip: Bend and mold the stems of the picks as you go. This will help them look more realistic and allows you to follow the shape of your tree.
5. Finish With A Tree Skirt
Finish your tree with a tree skirt. They come in a variety of colors and styles. Or you can even use a metal tree collar, woven basket, or an old wood crate.
My tree skirt isn’t a skirt at all. It’s an old woven throw blanket that I repurposed. I love the color and texture, and as a bonus, it hides the unsightly legs of the metal tree stand.
